Your poor webbie has been inundated with work and has not been able to keep up with the deluge of emails coming in with the latest from the local arts scene! In order for me to get everything out there, I'm doing this posting quick and dirty, with a lot of cutting, copying, and pasting--so if it seems a bit hackneyed and off, let me just apologize in advance!

Library Outreach...update from Gay Gatta:
Update to the Baysore-Brightwaters Public Library Show. Every civilization in every part of the world has a creation myth; a story that answers such questions as: Who are we? Where did we come from? How did we get here? When did we begin? What was it like in the beginning? The first three words of the Book of Genesis for example, are "in the beginning" But ancient Egyptians, as well as Native Americans and countless other cultures and civilizations have their own creation story. Many scientists call their creation story the "Big Bang Theory." As an artist, what is your version and vision of creation? Whatever your medium, inclusive of sculpture, film, and performance; and whatever your spirituality, religion, or lack of it ~ you are invited to submit your work for this cultural and artistic event. Inquiries: Rev. Dwight Lee Wolter, email pastor@churchonmainstreet.org.

Occasionally we receive mail that we feel is important to pass on to our email list regarding the state of arts and culture on both a national level and the level of New York State.

The email we received stated the following:

"The Supervisor has just released a list of layoffs--about 96 employees. Drop off and self-hanging is Wednesday, July 1 and Thursday, July 2 from 11am to 4pm. Please respond by email (asap) to reserve a wall space, and please limit your works to 2 (two) extra items for the wall so that we can allow as many artists to exhibit as possible. If you do choose to exhibit, please print out the attached inventory list to hand in with your works. All works must have NAME AND PRICE ON EACH ITEM. Described both as "entirely original" and "a singer with an uncanny emotional touch for the past 50 years of jazz," Wolper's growing popularity has her performing at concert halls, clubs, and festivals from California to Cape Town, Pennsylvania to Prague. A vibrant presence in her New York City home base, she has appeared at major venues including Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola (Jazz at Lincoln Center), JVC Jazz Festival, and Iridium. This is a rare hometown appearance for Filiano. Called "a creative virtuoso" and a "master of technique," Ken is one of the most in-demand double bassists working today, traveling the world, playing and recording with leading artists in jazz, improvisation, classical music, and tango. His pictures of the American war in Vietnam, which make up a substantial part of this show, amount to one of the great tragic portraits of their time and are, required viewing in ours."Tackling love, death, frivolity, politics and violence, Griffiths' photographs comment ironically and profoundly on virtually every aspect of human life. On the first anniversary of his death, this exhibit traces his 50-year journey from his native Wales to his most recent work in post-war Viet Nam. Holly Gordon, one of the exhibit curators, said, "His photographs are icons, giving that era a face it will live with forever." PAC vice-president and co-curator Karen Ferb said," His Vietnam photography transcends the differences over the war here at home, and his images draw conflicting emotions; the horror of war is tempered with humility, terror with beauty, and despair with hope. It is fitting that many of Griffiths' photographs played a significant role in changing public attitudes about the war. Many of the pictures included in this exhibit are among the most unforgettable images of war ever made." Members of the curatorial team also include Holly Gordon and John Cino (PAC). Lou Commisso (Briarcliffe College) has given valuable assistance. Other photographs in the exhibit capture the essence of the British presence in Northern Ireland and colonialism in Rhodesia. He became a member, then president, of the prestigious Magnum Photo agency for a record five years. He also worked for Life magazine and others. Running concurrently is a small exhibition from Street Vision, the Ho Chi Minh City based project of the international charity PhotoVoice. The Street Vision photographs by Vietnamese street kids documenting their lives, fears, and hopes were selected by Griffiths expressly for this exhibit. PAC president Chip Hunter said, "Those who are often seen only through the eyes of a photojournalist are given cameras to 'see' for themselves."

Call For VOLUNTEERS from the Philip Jones Griffiths Exhibit Committee
We are looking for members willing to volunteer 1 or 2 hours to gallery sit for the Phillip Jones Griffiths Exhibit see details above. They mix contemporary Celtic rock covers (Saw Doctors and The Pogues, for instance) with rocky versions of revered Irish songs (including a hard rock--dare I say metal--version of "The Fields of Athenry"), high-energy tune sets, and catchy, powerful originals (the most popular of which is "Eclipse," which is featured on this page). There's something for everybody at a Bangers and Mash show.

Described as "Bob Dylan singing a David Gray song", Johnny Cuomo returns to the Lobby to play songs from his Paradiddle Records release American Idle and also will perform traditional Irish music. Live In The Lobby began as Patchogue Village Trustee Jack Krieger's idea to bring more people to the Theatre on "dark" nights. The series has evolved into one of the most prestigious venues on Long Island for original music. Once a month on Thursday evenings, the beautiful PTPA lobby is converted into an intimate 50-seat concert hall with great sight lines and excellent acoustics. A maximum of 100 tickets are sold and for many shows, the lobby is at capacity. The series is run by a caring group of volunteers who book the bands, set up and operate the sound system, lights and chairs, collect tickets and put it all away at the end of the night. Tom Coburn (R-OK) that stated "None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project." Unfortunately, the amendment passed by a wide vote margin of 73-24, and surprisingly included support from many high profile Senators including Chuck Schumer of New York, Dianne Feinstein of California, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and several other Democratic and Republican Senators. If the Coburn amendment language is included in the final conference version of this legislation, many arts groups will be prevented from receiving economic recovery funds from any portion of this specific stimulus bill. It is clear that there is still much work to be done in the Senate and in the media about the role that nonprofit arts organizations and artists play in the nation's economy and workforce.

Plan of Action

1. Arts advocates need to quickly contact Senators who voted for the Coburn Amendment and express your extreme disappointment with their vote. Let's have lots of parties!
The PAC Fundraising committee is now being formed for 2009! PAC has several exciting events planned for the coming months, and what better way to raise funds for them then throwing a party? We're looking for people with fun ideas and lots of energy to plan and organize our Plein Air Party, the Beaux Arts Ball and kick-off parties for our various events. Sound like you? Then contact Committee Chair Carol Reitz-Butler at : AlchemyNY@aol.com

Our first meeting will be Saturday, January 24 at 10 AM at:97 South Country Road, East Patchogue, NY 11772 Come for coffee and bagels and the opportunity to do good and have fun!

MEMBER NEWS

Lori Devlin, Co-President of the Patchogue Arts Council would like to share information about another project she is working on. She asks if you know of anyone who might be interested to please forward the information.Over the next year, The Patchogue Village of Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with the Patchogue Medford Library and the Patchogue Arts Council will be working on a community quilt project to demonstrate our desire for and to promote peace in our community and beyond. The work of creating the blocks and assembling this quilt will be done in small groups which will meet in the Patchogue Medford community under the guidance of award winning quilt designer and East Patchogue resident Diana Berthold who conceived the idea, designed, and completed a sample project to promote peace and harmony for all people in our community and our great United States of America. Our goal is to invite all interested individuals including students and members of religious or community organizations to participate in the quilt's creation. The themes of hands and hearts are the suggested motifs to represent healing the hearts in our wounded community as a result of the tragedy and death of Marcelo Lucero. Participants are encouraged to incorporate their own individual touch as they work with these motifs. Historically the "Quilting Bee" was a community venture and a social occasion whereby individuals spent time, sharing and bonding as they worked purposefully on the creation of a beautiful quilt. By working together, we can develop bonds between our community's diverse groups and acknowledge the contributions that immigrants have made both today and throughout the American story. The first meetings will be informational in nature and will take place at on March 5 - 2PM and March 19 - 7PM at the Patchogue Medford Library. We welcome all interested parties to attend one of the 2 meetings as we begin to organize the groups. Additionally, we are seeking experienced quilters who can assist or facilitating a group. The finished product will be unveiled to the community in Nov 2009 and will then travel throughout the Patchogue Medford community. Ultimately the finished work will be displayed at The Patchogue Medford Theater for the Performing Arts. Interested individuals and groups should contact: patmedquilt@gmail.com

NEWS from Green Arts Festival Chairpeople Charlie Baker & Chip Hunter

GreenArtFestival@aol.com are planning the first ever Long Island Based "GREEN ART FESTIVAL".
